Director Sajeev Pazhoor’s Tamil socio-political family thriller *Enna Vilai*, starring Nimisha Sajayan and Karunas, has won the Best Cinematography Award at the Atlanta Indian Film Festival (AIFF).
The award recognises cinematographer Alby Antony’s work on the film, and producer Anugopal Venugopalan accepted it on his behalf at the festival ceremony.
Reacting to the recognition, Alby Antony described the honour as a proud and humbling moment, highlighting the importance of the film’s setting and characters in shaping its visual narrative. He dedicated the award to director Sajeev Pazhoor, producers Githesh Viswambharan and Anugopal Venugopalan, and the entire team.
The film’s producers also welcomed the international recognition, saying the award acknowledged Antony’s cinematography and the creative vision behind *Enna Vilai*.
Set in coastal Rameswaram, the film follows a fisherman whose life takes an unexpected turn, exploring themes of justice, dignity and resilience. The story centres on a livelihood connected to the coins devotees offer to the sea, with an initial struggle for survival developing into a wider legal battle.
Nimisha Sajayan has previously spoken about her experience of joining the project and the emotional connection she developed with her character, Kanchana.
The actress recalled that when Pazhoor first narrated the script, he did not reveal which role he had in mind for her. Instead, he asked her to choose between two well-written characters, leaving her uncertain about whether she would play Vijayalakshmi or Kanchana.
Sajayan said she was open to either role but already felt a particular connection to Kanchana. When the director eventually confirmed that he wanted her to play the character, she was overwhelmed with emotion and hugged him.
She also praised the film’s character development, noting that each role had a distinct emotional journey. Although she did not share many scenes with Karunas, who plays the lead, she described his performance as extraordinary.
Sajayan further praised the portrayal of Vijayalakshmi and credited Pazhoor for bringing the characters to life. She said the positive response from critics and the media had been deeply gratifying.
The Best Cinematography award adds international recognition to *Enna Vilai*, whose narrative places questions of livelihood, legal justice and human dignity at the centre of its story.
