Superstar Mammootty's appointment as the chief guest for the concluding public meeting of the annual feast of St. Gregorios of Parumala has sparked a debate within sections of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.
Mammootty is scheduled to attend the concluding programme of the pilgrimage week being held as part of the 124th remembrance feast of St. Gregorios of Parumala. The event will take place at the Parumala church premises in Pathanamthitta district at 3 p.m. on November 1.
The programme will be inaugurated by Catholicos of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, the supreme head of the Church. It will mark the culmination of the pilgrimage week and bring together pilgrims travelling to Parumala from different parts of Kerala.
The decision to invite Mammootty has prompted questions among sections of the Church community over the choice of a prominent film personality as chief guest at an event associated with one of the Church's most important pilgrimage centres.
Messages circulating among Church groups have raised concerns about the invitation, while making it clear that the criticism is not directed at Mammootty personally. The messages acknowledge his standing as an actor as well as his involvement in charitable activities.
Instead, the debate centres on the nature of the event and whether inviting a major film personality could establish a precedent for future Church festivals. Some members have questioned whether a celebrity presence could introduce elements of popular celebrity culture into a programme primarily centred on pilgrimage, prayer and religious observances.
Parumala is the final resting place of St. Gregorios, one of the most revered saints of the Malankara Orthodox Church. His annual remembrance feast draws large numbers of pilgrims and is traditionally centred on worship, prayer and other religious activities.
Those raising concerns have also questioned whether such invitations could make it more difficult for Church leaders to later advise parishes against excessive display and celebrity-focused celebrations during religious festivals.
The discussion comes as the Church has also been emphasising charitable and social initiatives during its feast programmes. During last year's pilgrimage week, the Church announced a project aimed at providing homes for 100 families, presenting it as an alternative to conventional celebrations.
The Church leadership has not publicly detailed the reasons behind the decision to invite Mammootty as the chief guest for this year's concluding programme.
Mammootty has maintained a public association with charitable initiatives and was recently praised by the Catholicos for supporting a project aimed at benefiting children.
The invitation has consequently prompted a broader discussion within sections of the Church community over how major religious celebrations can balance public outreach with their primarily spiritual and devotional character.
