Actress Anne Hathaway has opened up about the unusual symptoms she experienced during her pregnancy, joking that her heightened sense of smell became so intense that she felt she could actually “smell time”.

Hathaway discussed her pregnancy while appearing on *The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon*, where she also spoke about discovering she was expecting shortly before the promotional tour for *The Devil Wears Prada 2*.

During her appearance, Hathaway mentioned that it took her a moment to get comfortable in her chair, prompting host Jimmy Fallon to jokingly offer to take her to the hospital.

Fallon quipped that he and the team were ready to take care of her, calling her “America’s sweetheart”.

Hathaway revealed that she discovered she was pregnant around two and a half weeks before the press tour for *The Devil Wears Prada 2* began.

“And I was just like, how is that going to work?” she recalled.

Comparing the experience with her first pregnancy, Hathaway said fatigue had been her primary symptom previously. This time, however, she experienced acne along with an unusually sensitive sense of smell.

“You know, my main symptom during my first pregnancy was fatigue, and that didn't happen this time. This time, my main symptom was, well, acne. But I had, like, the craziest sense of smell,” she said.

Hathaway then described the experience in a humorous way, saying pregnancy had altered her perception of scents so dramatically that she felt she could smell different periods of her life.

“The thing about pregnancy smell is you smell time,” she said.

According to Hathaway, certain scents even transported her back to summers from decades earlier.

“So you don't just smell this summer. You smell all of them. A couple other summers. I went back to the 80s,” she said.

She explained that travelling during a press tour made the heightened sense of smell particularly noticeable, as she encountered everything from hotel kitchens and garbage bins to room-service meals and strong perfumes while moving between locations.

Hathaway also joked about the changing goals she set for herself during different stages of the pregnancy.

“So first trimester, my goal was to not, like, dry heave in public. And now third trimester, my goal is to not waddle in public. So I feel like that's a good thing,” she said.
