Actor Arjun Rampal was once set to feature in the ensemble cast of Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s acclaimed film *Rang De Basanti*, but the role of Karan Singhania eventually went to Siddharth.

Arjun Rampal had reportedly shot for a couple of days before his association with the project came to an abrupt end.

During an appearance on filmmaker Karan Johar’s chat show *Koffee with Karan*, Rampal opened up about the experience, suggesting that Aamir Khan had concerns about his casting and that differences with the director also contributed to the situation.

Rampal said he had heard that Aamir took a keen interest in the films he worked on and had been looking forward to collaborating with the actor. However, he acknowledged that Aamir had expressed reservations.

“I had heard rumours that Aamir Khan does take a keen interest in his films, and I would have loved to work with him. But out of respect to him, he did have a lot of fears that he put on the table, and I hope all those fears are sorted now and can make the film that he wants,” Rampal said.

The actor also spoke about his difficulties working with Mehra, describing the process as confusing and unpredictable. According to Rampal, he had signed the film, prepared a new look and blocked his dates, but uncertainty surrounding the script and his character made the collaboration increasingly difficult.

“I had a problem with the director. I was signed for the film. I had a new look and blocked my dates. It just became very confusing because the director was very confused,” he recalled.

Rampal said the filmmaker appeared to change his approach frequently, leaving him uncertain about the direction of the project and his role in it.

“I’m happy it didn’t work out in a way, because Rakeysh was very confused about the script; he was very erratic. Some days he would be like, ‘This is the way I want to do it’… and ‘You’re my character, oh are you my character?’ When someone is this confused, it’s best to say, ‘I can’t work with you, and good luck,’” he said.

The actor further revealed that he had reserved the next three months for the film at the director’s request and had turned down other professional opportunities during that period.

Calling the experience unprofessional, Rampal said the uncertainty had affected his career prospects, as projects that might otherwise have come his way went to other actors.

“I think it is very unprofessional to do that to an actor. Yes, there was a good amount of work coming to me and good work—and so people who were meant to be coming to me, didn’t come. I have lost out on work,” he said.

Released in 2006, *Rang De Basanti* featured an ensemble cast including Aamir Khan, Siddharth, Sharman Joshi, Kunal Kapoor, Atul Kulkarni, Soha Ali Khan and Alice Patten. The film, which explored youth, political awakening and patriotism, went on to become one of the most widely discussed Hindi films of its time.
