Shreya Ghoshal Says Independent Music Gives Her Freedom to Explore New Sounds

The singer has now released her latest independent track, *Bairi Piya*, which sees her explore a contemporary pop sound a musical idea beyond the spaces she usually encounters through playback singing while bringing out a softer and more intimate side of her vocals.

The song blends warm synths, clean beats and a gentle rhythmic pulse with subtle touches of Indian classical music, creating a contemporary arrangement that retains an unmistakably Indian musical character.

“Independent music has been an important part of my journey for a long time because it gives me the freedom to explore songs and sounds outside the usual spaces I get to experience through playback music. Every independent project has brought something different for me, whether it was experimenting with a sound, collaborating with another artist or simply approaching a song differently,” Shreya said.

Talking about *Bairi Piya*, she said the melody and simplicity of the song were what drew her towards the project.

“With ‘Bairi Piya’, I was drawn to the melody and the simplicity of the song, and I enjoyed exploring this softer, contemporary space. I think this is what I enjoy most about independent music, the freedom to keep discovering different sides of myself through it,” she added.

Over the years, Shreya has explored a range of independent releases, using the format to experiment beyond the traditional film music space. Her independent work has taken her across different languages, genres and collaborations, allowing her to continually expand her musical palette.

Her recent work includes *Kalyani (Remix)*, where she collaborated with ARJN, KDS and FIFTY4 to reimagine MVR’s successful Malayalam independent track.

With *Bairi Piya*, the singer continues to explore the creative possibilities of independent music while bringing her established vocal style into a contemporary setting.
