Rajat Bedi on Moving Beyond Negative Roles: ‘I Don't Want to Limit Myself to One Image’

Rajat Bedi, who has appeared in films such as *Jaani Dushman* and *Koi... Mil Gaya*, said he now wants to explore more diverse and challenging parts that allow him to demonstrate a wider range as an actor.

“I have been fortunate to play characters that people remember, but I also understand that audiences often associate me with negative or antagonistic roles, whether it was Jaani Dushman or Koi... Mil Gaya,” Bedi said.

“As an actor, I don't want to limit myself to one image. I want to explore different characters and show the audience the other sides of my craft. I am now looking for roles that are diverse, challenging and give me something new to perform,” he added.

For Bedi, taking on unfamiliar territory is an important part of the next stage of his career. He said he wants audiences to see him in roles that they would not necessarily associate with his earlier work.

“For me, the excitement is in stepping out of my comfort zone and making people say, ‘I haven't seen Rajat in this space before.’ I want to keep experimenting and let my work speak for the range I can bring as an actor,” he said.

While Bedi has portrayed different types of characters over the years, his antagonistic performances have remained among his most recognisable work. His roles in *Jaani Dushman* and *Koi... Mil Gaya* helped establish him as a familiar face in negative parts.

The actor, who is the son of filmmaker Narendra Bedi, entered the film industry at the age of 18. He began his career working as an assistant director to Ramesh Sippy and was involved with the 1995 film *Zamaana Deewana*.

Bedi returned to the spotlight in 2025 with the Netflix series *The Ba***ds of Bollywood*, in which he played Jaraj Saxena. The series marked the directorial debut of Aryan Khan, son of actor Shah Rukh Khan.

With his latest comments, Bedi has made it clear that he is keen to use the next phase of his career to move beyond the image audiences have traditionally associated with him and take on roles that offer greater creative variety.
