Farmers in Gujarat have sold more than 3.20 crore quintals of agricultural produce valued at ₹12,740.60 crore through the National Agriculture Market (eNAM) platform, with nearly 8.70 lakh farmers registered.
Launched by the Union government in 2016, eNAM connects agricultural markets regulated by Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs) through a unified online marketplace. The platform aims to expand farmers’ access to buyers, improve price discovery, increase transparency in transactions and facilitate direct payments.
Gujarat has 8,87,865 registered stakeholders on the platform, including 8,69,922 farmers, 10,291 traders, 7,191 commission agents and 461 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs). A total of 144 mandis across the state are registered with eNAM.
The platform is managed by the Small Farmers Agribusiness Consortium (SFAC) under the Union Ministry of Agriculture.
Digital trading expands market access
eNAM facilitates online trading through quality-based auctions, enabling farmers to access prices determined by supply, demand and the quality of their produce. The system is intended to reduce information gaps between farmers and traders while providing sellers access to a wider pool of potential buyers.
The platform also enables payments to be transferred directly into farmers’ bank accounts, reducing the need for intermediaries in the payment process.
Farmers using eNAM in Gujarat have reported improvements in transaction speed and earnings compared with traditional local markets.
Farmers report higher returns through eNAM
Parbatbhai Patat, a farmer associated with the Una Market Committee, has been selling groundnuts through eNAM for the past year.
He said the online process was faster than conventional market transactions and had earned him an additional ₹200–₹500 per sale, increasing his overall income by approximately 5–7 per cent.
“The process is much faster, and we receive excellent prices,” Patat said, adding that direct bank transfers had made transactions simpler and more convenient.
Haresh Ghodasara, who is associated with the Upleta Market Committee, has used the platform for five years to sell cotton, groundnuts and wheat.
Ghodasara said his income had increased by an estimated 15–20 per cent compared with sales through local markets, attributing the improvement to direct access to traders and savings on commissions.
“Selling agricultural produce online through eNAM has been a game-changer. By directly connecting with traders, we save on commissions, and payments are deposited directly into our accounts,” he said.
Reflecting on his financial circumstances two decades ago, Ghodasara added that the economic benefits he associated with the platform had made him prefer online sales.
Gujarat pushes digital agricultural marketing
The expansion of eNAM participation in Gujarat reflects efforts to use digital infrastructure to improve agricultural marketing and connect farmers with buyers beyond their immediate trading areas.
By combining online auctions, quality-based price discovery and direct bank payments, the platform seeks to make agricultural transactions more transparent and provide farmers with additional selling opportunities.
The Gujarat government has been implementing the platform under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel as part of broader efforts to strengthen digital access to agricultural markets.
While individual farmers have reported higher returns, the overall benefits can vary depending on the crop, quality, prevailing market prices and trading conditions.
