Goa Police have registered an unnatural death case following the death of Bollywood actor Nana Patekar and will record statements from his family members and other relevant individuals as part of the investigation.
Police have registered the case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and are investigating it with Police Sub-Inspector Nitin Naik.
According to reports, Patekar was taken from his residence in Dona Paula to Manipal Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Police will conduct a panchnama, examine the post-mortem report from Goa Medical College (GMC) and question family members and other relevant individuals to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
Officials are investigating the case to determine the cause of death. If the findings establish that the death was natural, the case may be closed. However, any evidence of foul play or suspicious circumstances could lead to further legal action.
Dr Shekhar Salkar of Manipal Hospital had told the media on Thursday morning that the medical team had attempted to revive the actor but he was brought to the hospital dead. He said the hospital was required to inform the police and register a case.
The doctor also said that, according to the information available to him, Patekar had a heart condition and was taking medication.
The veteran actor died early Thursday morning after reportedly suffering a cardiac arrest at his Goa residence. Doctors at Manipal Hospital attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for approximately 45 minutes, but he was declared dead at 5.20 a.m.
A post-mortem examination was conducted on Thursday morning, after which his body was handed over to the family for the last rites.
Patekar was born on January 1, 1951, and his real name was Vishwanath Patekar. He belonged to a Marathi family. His father, Gajanan, also known as Dinkar Patekar, worked as a textile painter and businessman and died when the actor was 28.
His mother, Nirmala Patekar, also known as Sanjanabai Patekar, was a homemaker. She stayed with the actor until her death on January 29, 2019, at age 99.
