West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh on Saturday dismissed Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee’s allegation that his residence in Kolkata had been attacked, questioning who would have the time to target the senior party.

Reacting to Banerjee’s claims, Ghosh said that if people created a disturbance outside the residence at night, others would inevitably respond.

“If they create havoc there at night, someone will surely counter it. And who has the time to kill Abhishek Banerjee?” Ghosh said.

Banerjee alleges attack on Kalighat residence

Ghosh’s remarks came after Banerjee staged a sit-in protest, alleging that BJP supporters had attacked his residence on Kalighat Road in the early hours of Saturday.

Banerjee claimed that a group of BJP supporters pelted stones at his house at around 2 a.m. He further alleged that this was the seventh attempt on his life in the past six months.

The allegations followed reports of a late-night confrontation between BJP and Trinamool supporters outside his residence. Kolkata Police intervened to bring the situation under control.

Banerjee also alleged that BJP supporters had been conducting reconnaissance around his residence for two days before the incident. He criticised the judiciary for what he described as its failure to intervene despite repeated attempts on his life.

Ghosh questions Rahul Gandhi’s call for debate with PM Modi

Separately, Ghosh responded to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s demand for a public debate with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning Gandhi’s record of engaging with questions and debates.

Ghosh alleged that Gandhi rarely faces questions from the media or participates in parliamentary discussions, adding that he generally delivers speeches and leaves.

He also suggested that Gandhi could hold a debate with his INDIA bloc partners instead.

Ghosh was responding to Gandhi’s challenge to the Prime Minister to participate in a public debate over allegations of anti-national activities and purported links with foreign forces.

In a post on X, Gandhi had urged Modi to choose any venue for the discussion, asking him to address the Opposition’s alleged links with foreign entities and the accusations of anti-national conduct levelled against it.

“24 hours have passed, Modi ji. I challenged you. You say that the Opposition is anti-national. Pick any stage, any venue, and debate me,” Gandhi wrote, calling on the Prime Minister to respond without delay.
