Boxing Federation of India president Ajay Singh has praised India's performance at the Asian Games, saying the team's six medals from 11 events represent a significant improvement over the previous edition.
India's boxing campaign has so far produced six medals, including three bronze medals won by Priya Ghanghas, Narender and Kapil Pokhariya. Lovlina Borgohain, Ankush Dahiya and Parveen Hooda have also reached the finals in their respective events and remain in contention for gold.
“We've got six medals in this Asian Games out of 11 events. Last time we got four medals out of 13 events that were held. So we've done considerably better than the last time,” Ajay Singh said.
The BFI chief said the depth of competition at the Asian Games makes India's performance particularly significant, with many of the world's leading boxing nations taking part.
“The fact that three boxers are in the finals now, I think, is an incredible achievement given that the Asian Games for boxing is very similar to the Olympics,” he said.
“All the top countries in the world are in the Asian Games. So whatever performance we are doing here, it's very possible that this will be replicated in the Olympics. So getting six medals, out of which three are now in the finals, is an incredible achievement,” Singh added.
He also expressed hope that India's finalists would convert their opportunities into gold medals when the remaining bouts take place.
“We are hoping that tomorrow or day after, when the finals are held, we convert some of those finalists into golds,” he said.
India's three bronze medals on Wednesday came through Priya in the women's 60kg category, Narender in the men's +90kg division and Kapil in the men's 90kg event.
Priya, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, lost 1-4 to China's Yang Chengyu in the semifinal. The Indian boxer adopted an attacking approach but could not accumulate enough points across the three rounds to secure a place in the final.
Narender was beaten 0-5 by Kazakhstan's reigning world champion Oralbay in the men's +90kg semifinal. The Indian fought hard but Oralbay maintained control through effective punching and defence to secure a unanimous-decision victory.
Kapil also finished with a bronze after losing 1-4 to Uzbekistan's world champion Turabek Khabibullaev in the men's 90kg semifinal.
India still have three opportunities to add gold medals to their boxing tally.
Lovlina secured her place in the women's 75kg final after edging Kazakhstan's Natalya Bogdanova 3-2 in a closely fought semifinal.
Parveen and Ankush have also progressed to the finals of their respective events, giving India three chances to fight for gold on October 2.
