Paralympic champions Pramod Bhagat and Bhavina Patel have been named India's flag bearers for the opening ceremony of the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Para Games, which will be held on October 18 in Nagoya, Japan.

Bhagat, one of India's most accomplished para badminton players, has won six Asian Para Games medals between 2014 and 2023, including two gold and four bronze medals.

Patel, a leading figure in Indian para table tennis, has claimed two medals at the Asian Para Games between 2018 and 2023, comprising one silver and one bronze.

Expressing her delight at being selected, Patel said carrying the Indian flag was a matter of great pride and represented something larger than individual achievement. She said she was looking forward to leading the contingent alongside Bhagat and hoped Indian athletes would compete with confidence while making the most of the Games.

The two athletes have collectively won eight Asian Para Games medals and will now lead the Indian contingent as it begins its campaign at the fifth edition of the continental para sporting event, scheduled from October 18 to 24.

Their selection reflects their longstanding contribution to India's progress in para sport. Both athletes have produced strong performances at major international competitions and have become prominent figures for a new generation of para athletes.

Devendra Jhajharia, President of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI), said it was a matter of immense pride to have Bhagat and Patel lead the contingent at the opening ceremony.

He described both athletes as exceptional champions whose achievements, resilience and contribution to Indian para sport made them appropriate representatives of the country's contingent. Jhajharia also expressed confidence that their presence would inspire the athletes competing at the Games.

The PCI will formally send off the Indian contingent at a ceremony on Thursday. Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya will attend the event as chief guest, while Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Nikhil Khadse will be the guest of honour.

The Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Para Games will feature para athletes from across Asia, with India aiming to build on its performances at major international competitions.
