Two people were killed and three others were seriously injured after a speeding SUV collided with a parked concrete mixer truck on the Patna-Buxar four-lane highway in Bihar's Buxar district on Saturday.
The accident took place near Nuaon village, within the jurisdiction of Krishna Brahm police station.
According to eyewitnesses, the SUV was travelling from Patna towards Buxar when it crashed into the stationary truck parked along the highway. The impact left the SUV severely mangled, trapping all five occupants inside.
Religious offerings and other belongings found scattered at the accident site have led to speculation that the occupants were returning to their home in Lucknow after visiting Baba Dham in Deoghar, Jharkhand.
Eyewitness Krishna Sharma said the SUV rammed into the truck, which was carrying a concrete mixer machine used in road construction. Two occupants died at the spot, while three others sustained serious injuries.
Injured shifted to hospitals
Local residents and police personnel rushed to the scene following the collision and arranged for the injured to be taken to Dumraon Sub-Divisional Hospital.
Two of the injured were later referred to Buxar Sadar Hospital for advanced treatment, while the third continued to receive medical care at Dumraon.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Bhaskar Ranjan visited the accident site and initiated an investigation. He said the driver may have lost control of the SUV, possibly after falling asleep at the wheel, resulting in the collision with the parked truck.
However, police said the exact cause of the accident has not yet been established.
"Two people have died in the accident, while three others sustained serious injuries. One injured person is undergoing treatment at Dumraon Sub-Divisional Hospital, while the other two have been admitted to Buxar Sadar Hospital. The identities of the deceased are being established," Ranjan said.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and working to establish the identities and backgrounds of all five occupants.
