Rani Mukerji’s Mother Krishna Mukherjee Passes Away at 75, Celebrities Pay Their Respects

Krishna Mukherjee, former playback singer and mother of Bollywood actor Rani Mukerji, has passed away at the age of 75 following a brief illness. The news was confirmed through an official statement released by Yash Raj Films on behalf of the family, expressing profound grief and thanking well-wishers for their prayers while requesting privacy during this period of mourning.

A respected artist in her own right, Krishna Mukherjee contributed as a playback singer to Bengali cinema as well as select Hindi film tracks, including work for composer duo Laxmikant–Pyarelal. She was married to the late veteran filmmaker and Filmalaya Studios co-founder Ram Mukherjee, who passed away in 2017, placing her at the center of a storied cinematic legacy that spanned several generations of Indian entertainment.

Beyond her artistic background, she served as the primary guiding force and anchor behind Rani Mukerji’s decorated career. Rani frequently spoke of her mother's sharp eye for storytelling and strict professional standards, crediting her directly for encouraging her transition into acting and instilling the discipline required to sustain it. Over the decades, she remained a familiar, warm presence beside her daughter at major industry milestones and public appearances.

She is survived by her daughter Rani Mukerji, son Raja Mukerji, son-in-law Aditya Chopra, and her grandchildren. Friends, colleagues, and members of the film fraternity have begun sharing condolences with the family as final rites are arranged in Mumbai.
