Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has highlighted opportunities for German companies to invest, expand manufacturing and drive innovation in India during meetings with business leaders in Berlin.

Goyal emphasised the potential for India and the European Union (EU) to strengthen their economic partnership through mutual trust, competitiveness and complementary capabilities.

During a meeting with Stefan Oelrich, President of the Pharmaceuticals Division at Bayer, the minister discussed the company's expansion plans in India and opportunities to increase investment, innovation and collaboration within the country's healthcare sector.

Goyal also met Michael Sen, CEO of Fresenius Group, to explore avenues for deeper cooperation in healthcare. Discussions focused on India's expanding healthcare market, rising demand for affordable and high-quality medical solutions, and the country's manufacturing capabilities.

The minister highlighted India's skilled workforce and production infrastructure as potential assets for companies looking to serve domestic and international markets.

In another meeting, Goyal discussed the company's manufacturing expansion in India with Murat Akyildiz, Global General Partner at Knauf Group. The talks also covered potential collaboration in sustainable construction materials and infrastructure development, amid the country's ongoing urbanisation and economic growth.

Earlier, Goyal participated in the inauguration of the India Centre at the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), alongside Germany's Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, Katherina Reiche.

The minister said the new centre reflected the strengthening relationship between India and Germany and their shared commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation.

He also highlighted the potential for an India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to further strengthen economic ties, noting that the two sides could leverage their complementary strengths to advance shared economic objectives.

Goyal called for greater cooperation between Indian and German businesses to build resilient global supply chains and identify new opportunities for investment and commercial partnerships.

The minister also participated in a Business Leaders Roundtable hosted by ESMT Berlin, where he interacted with chief executives and other business representatives. He expressed confidence in the potential to further strengthen India-Germany trade and economic relations through expanded business engagement and investment.
