Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday threatened to approach the Supreme Court over the clashes outside the south Kolkata residence of her nephew and Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee.
Mamata visited Abhishek’s residence in Kalighat, located close to her own home, and accused the police of failing to intervene when the incident took place in the early hours of Saturday.
“If required, I will take this matter to the Supreme Court,” she indicated, alleging that BJP-backed groups had orchestrated the disturbance.
“A group of lumpen elements backed by the BJP orchestrated the attack on Abhishek’s house after 2 a.m. The police remained silent spectators,” she alleged.
Mamata targets Kalighat police station officer
The Trinamool Congress chief specifically criticised Bolai Bag, the officer-in-charge of Kalighat police station, which has jurisdiction over both residences. She warned that the officer’s conduct could provoke public anger.
Mamata also accused the police of attempting to disrupt the annual Kali Puja celebrations at her residence and restricting access for people wishing to visit her home during the festival.
Allegations over Kali Puja arrangements and prohibitory orders
Claiming that the neighbourhood had been deliberately placed under tension ahead of the celebrations, Mamata alleged that traditional community pujas were being obstructed while new ones were being organised.
“An atmosphere of unrest has been deliberately created in this area before the Kali Puja. The pujas of old clubs are being prevented. However, new pujas are starting overnight. The entrance to my house has been practically blocked, and new pujas have been organised. The police vehicles have deliberately been kept blocking the entrance to my house. The police have also issued prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS, 2023,” she said.
She further alleged that police surveillance had been intensified to prevent gatherings outside her residence and discourage people from visiting during Kali Puja.
“As a result, the police have intensified surveillance to ensure that no gathering takes place in front of my house. All this is done to prevent people from coming to my house on the occasion of the Kali Puja,” she said.
Mamata questions BJP’s democratic credentials
Mamata accused the BJP of being responsible for the tension outside Abhishek’s residence and questioned the party’s claims of defending democracy.
“On one hand, they are organising ‘Save Democracy, Eliminate Anarchy’ rallies in the state, and on the other hand, they are the ones who are trampling the democratic structure,” she said.
She also criticised the state administration, indirectly targeting Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, whom she accused of being behind the developments.
“I am not blaming all from BJP. But the one who is leading the administration in West Bengal is behind all these,” she alleged.
