Asian Games: President Murmu Congratulates Priya Ghanghas on Boxing Bronze

Priya secured the bronze after losing 1-4 to China's Yang Chengyu in the semifinal at the Nishio Gymnasium on Wednesday. The result sent Yang into the gold-medal bout, while Priya's run at the Games ended with a podium finish.

The Indian boxer had entered the semifinal following a strong quarterfinal performance, where she defeated Tajikistan's Mijgona Samadova 5-0. She had also beaten South Korea's two-time world medallist Oh Yeonji in the pre-quarterfinals.

Against Yang, Priya started on the front foot and looked to impose an attacking style, but the Chinese boxer remained composed and defended effectively against several of her combinations.

Yang edged the opening round 3-2 on the judges' scorecards. Priya increased the pressure in the second round, attempting to close the distance, but Yang's compact defence limited the Indian's opportunities to land clean punches. Yang took the second round 4-1.

With a deficit to overcome, Priya pressed forward again in the final round and tried to raise the pace. Yang continued to absorb or block several attacks while finding opportunities to score herself, eventually taking the round 4-1 and securing the 4-1 split-decision victory.

The bronze adds another international medal to Priya's record. The Bhiwani-born boxer is the reigning Commonwealth Games champion and had also won gold at the 2026 Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Ulaanbaatar.

Her bronze is part of a strong boxing campaign for India at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, with several Indian boxers reaching the medal stages.
