President Droupadi Murmu congratulated India’s women’s squash team after Anahat Singh, Tanvi Khanna, Joshna Chinappa and Shameena Riaz secured a bronze medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya.
Taking to X, Murmu praised the team’s collective effort after India added another squash medal to its Asian Games tally.
India secured the bronze after losing 2-1 to Hong Kong in a closely contested semifinal at the Nagoya Kinjo Futo Arena.
Anahat opened the tie against Chan Sin Yuk and came close to completing a memorable comeback after taking the first two games. The Indian teenager won 11-9 and 11-8 before Chan responded by taking the next three games 11-6, 13-11 and 12-10 to win the match 3-2.
Tanvi then levelled the team contest with a determined performance against world No. 40 Lee Ka Yi. After dropping the opening game 4-11, Tanvi won three consecutive games 13-11, 11-9 and 13-11 to give India a chance of reaching the final.
Joshna, however, was unable to complete the turnaround in the deciding match. She was beaten 3-0 by Ho Tze Lok, handing Hong Kong the semifinal victory and leaving India with the bronze medal.
The medal was Anahat’s second of the tournament. The teenager had earlier claimed silver in the women’s singles event.
Joshna, Tanvi and Anahat were also members of India’s women’s squash team that won bronze at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou.
India’s squash medal count at the Aichi-Nagoya Games now stands at four. Along with Anahat’s singles silver, Abhay Singh has won silver in the men’s singles, while Joshna Chinappa and Velavan Senthilkumar claimed bronze in mixed doubles.
India had a stronger overall medal haul in squash at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, where the country won five medals, including two gold, one silver and two bronze.
The women’s team bronze in Nagoya gives India another podium finish in the event and marks a repeat of the bronze-medal result achieved by the team at the previous Asian Games.
