India's women's squash team secured a bronze medal at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya after losing 2-1 to Hong Kong in the semifinal at the Nagoya Kinjo Futo Arena on Wednesday.
Anahat Singh began the tie for India but went down 3-2 to Chan Sin Yuk in a closely fought encounter. Chan won 11-9, 11-8, 6-11, 11-13, 10-12.
Tanvi Khanna then brought India back into the contest with a 3-1 victory over world No. 40 Lee Ka Yi. After losing the opening game 4-11, Tanvi fought back to win the next three 13-11, 11-9 and 13-11, levelling the tie at 1-1.
The deciding match saw Joshna Chinappa take on Ho Tze Lok, but the experienced Indian was beaten 3-0, with Ho winning 11-4, 11-7, 11-9 to send Hong Kong into the final and leave India with the bronze medal.
Anahat, who had several match points in the third game of her opening match, was unable to convert them as Chan eventually prevailed. Tanvi's comeback kept India's hopes alive before Ho settled the tie in Hong Kong's favour.
The bronze is Anahat's second medal at the ongoing Games after she won silver in the women's singles event.
Joshna, Tanvi and Anahat were also members of India's women's team that won bronze at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023. Anahat had additionally been part of India's bronze-medal winning women's and mixed teams at the previous edition.
The medal is India's fourth in squash at the Aichi-Nagoya Games. Earlier, Anahat and Abhay Singh finished with silver medals in the women's and men's singles events respectively after losing their gold-medal matches to Malaysian opponents.
Anahat was beaten 3-0 by Malaysia's Sivasangari Subramaniam in the women's singles final, while Abhay lost 3-0 to Ng Eain Yow in the men's singles final.
Abhay became only the second Indian to win a men's singles silver at the Asian Games, after Saurav Ghosal, who reached the final at both Incheon 2014 and Hangzhou 2023 but did not win gold.
India's mixed doubles pair of Joshna Chinappa and Velavan Senthilkumar had earlier secured another bronze medal at the ongoing Games.
India entered the Aichi-Nagoya Games after a strong squash campaign at Hangzhou 2023, where it won five medals, including two gold, one silver and two bronze. The men's team and mixed doubles pair won gold, while Ghosal took silver in men's singles and India won bronze in the women's team and mixed team events.
