Asian Games: India Stage Dramatic Comeback to Beat China for Men’s Compound Team Gold

China made the stronger start in the men’s final, scoring a perfect 60 from their opening six arrows while India managed 58. The two-point deficit remained after the first end, setting up a closely fought contest.

The victory completed a clean sweep of the compound team events for India, who had earlier won gold in the women’s team and mixed team competitions.

Both teams produced perfect scores in the second end, with six 10s apiece. China briefly faced uncertainty when one of its arrows was initially judged to have landed in the nine ring, but an umpire inspection while the arrows were being retrieved resulted in the score being upgraded to 10. China therefore maintained a flawless 120, while India remained two points behind at 118.

The momentum shifted in the third end. China dropped a point while India once again delivered six perfect shots, cutting the gap to just one point at 178-179 heading into the final end.

India then completed the turnaround in dramatic fashion. China opened the fourth end with an eight before following it with two 10s. India, meanwhile, opened with three consecutive 10s to establish a decisive one-point advantage.

Although China responded with three perfect 10s with its final arrows, India held on to secure the 238-237 victory and another Asian Games gold.

Earlier, the Indian women’s compound team of Chikitha Taniparthi, Prithika Pradeep and Jyothi Surekha Vennam defeated China 238-234 to successfully retain their title. Chikitha and Sahil then added the mixed team gold, a result that also secured India a quota place for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

India’s latest success lifted the country to seventh in the overall medal standings with 10 gold, 21 silver and 27 bronze medals.

With the team events now concluded, Ganesh Mani Ratnam and Chikitha Taniparthi will turn their attention to the individual competition, with both scheduled to compete in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
