India's wait for a men's volleyball medal at the Asian Games since 1986 will continue after Pakistan defeated them in straight sets in the quarterfinals at Aichi-Nagoya 2026 on Thursday.
Pakistan secured a 25-19, 25-23, 25-18 victory at the Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Gymnasium to advance to the semifinals. The win also ensured Pakistan would reach the top four in men's volleyball at the Asian Games for the first time in 64 years.
The opening set remained closely contested early on, with the two teams level at 11-11. Pakistan then produced a decisive five-point run to move 16-11 ahead. India could not recover the deficit as Pakistan closed out the set 25-19.
India appeared to be in control of the second set when they moved into a 19-16 lead. However, a series of errors allowed Pakistan to regain momentum and turn the contest around. Pakistan eventually took the set 25-23 to establish a 2-0 lead.
Pakistan controlled much of the third set and maintained its advantage to complete the straight-set victory, winning 25-18.
India had entered the knockout stage unbeaten after finishing at the top of Pool C with three wins from three matches. They opened their campaign with a 3-0 win over Vietnam before defeating Hong Kong China by the same scoreline.
India then staged a dramatic comeback against Qatar in their final pool match. After losing the first two sets, the Indian side fought back to win 3-2, with the match ending 26-28, 25-27, 25-23, 25-20, 24-22.
That victory saw India finish above Qatar at the top of Pool C and secure a place in the quarterfinals.
The defeat also continued Pakistan's recent head-to-head advantage over India at the Asian Games. Pakistan defeated India 3-0 in the fifth-place classification match at Hangzhou 2023, where Pakistan finished fifth and India sixth. Pakistan had also beaten India 3-1 at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta.
India have won three men's volleyball medals in Asian Games history, including silver at Jakarta 1962 and bronze medals at Tokyo 1958 and Seoul 1986.
Pakistan have one men's volleyball medal to their name, a bronze won at the 1962 Asian Games in Jakarta, the same edition in which India claimed silver.
