India's Chikitha Taniparthi was eliminated from the women's compound individual archery event after suffering a narrow 144-143 defeat to Indonesia's Nurisa Dian Ashrifah in the quarterfinals at the Asian Games.

Competing at the Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Multipurpose Square, Chikitha fell behind during the opening two ends before producing a strong third end to move ahead. However, her final-end sequence of 8, 9 and 10 allowed Nurisa to regain the advantage, with the Indonesian responding with scores of 10, 10 and 9 to secure a one-point victory.

The defeat marked the first compound archery event at the Aichi-Nagoya Games in which India failed to retain the gold medal won at Hangzhou 2023. India's compound archers had swept all five gold medals on offer at the previous edition.

Chikitha, however, has already enjoyed a highly successful campaign in Japan, winning two gold medals. She was part of India's victorious women's compound team before combining with Sahil Jadhav to claim the mixed team title, a victory that also secured India a quota place for the mixed team event at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

In the women's team event, Chikitha joined Prithika Pradeep and Jyothi Surekha Vennam as India defeated China 238-234 to successfully defend their Asian Games title on Wednesday. India had previously won silver in the event at Jakarta 2018 and bronze at Incheon 2014.

The Indian trio had overcome South Korea in the semifinal before beating China in the final with a score of 238, matching the world-record mark previously set by South Korea at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon.

Chikitha then partnered Sahil Jadhav in the mixed team final, where India defeated South Korea's Park Jungyoon and Choi Yonghee in a shoot-off. The scores were level at 157-157 after the final end, with India eventually prevailing to secure the gold medal and the Olympic quota place.

Jadhav went on to add another gold medal in the men's team event, joining Kushal Dalal and Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru as India staged a comeback to defeat China.

India had enjoyed its most successful Asian Games archery campaign at Hangzhou 2023, collecting a record nine medals, including five gold, two silver and two bronze. The compound archers accounted for all five gold medals, while India's recurve teams added a silver and a bronze.
