The Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned Rs 2,000 crore for the implementation of the Vetri Laptop Scheme, which aims to provide free laptops to students pursuing higher education in government.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has approved the allocation, with the government issuing an order granting administrative clearance and laying down guidelines for the programme. The scheme was announced in the 2026–27 state Budget.
The initiative is intended to improve digital literacy, strengthen technical skills and expand access to educational resources, particularly for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Under the scheme, first- and second-year undergraduate and diploma students enrolled in government and government-aided institutions during the 2026–27 academic year will be eligible for free laptops.
The coverage extends to students pursuing courses in arts and science, engineering, polytechnic, industrial training, medicine, veterinary science, fisheries, agriculture and law.
The government has also included third- and fourth-year students enrolled in professional courses who did not receive laptops during the previous academic year, 2025–26.
Higher-performance laptops for engineering students
Recognising the specialised computing requirements of engineering courses, the government has decided to provide eligible engineering students with higher-performance laptops featuring Intel Core i5 processors or equivalent technology.
A high-level steering committee, headed by Chief Minister Vijay, will be established to oversee implementation, monitor progress and coordinate the departments involved.
The Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) will handle the procurement process and ensure that the laptops meet the prescribed technical specifications and quality standards.
Focus on bridging the digital divide
The government expects the scheme to benefit students from lower- and middle-income households who may otherwise find it difficult to purchase computers needed for their education.
Officials said access to laptops would support online learning, help students acquire specialised technical skills and improve their preparation for employment opportunities in an increasingly digital economy.
The state government has described the Vetri Laptop Scheme as part of its broader effort to improve educational access, promote skill development and prepare young people for emerging opportunities in technology-driven industries.
