Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee has alleged that an attempt was made on his life after clashes reportedly broke out between supporters of the BJP and the Trinamool Congress outside his residence in Kolkata during the early hours of Saturday.
The confrontation took place in several phases between approximately 2.30 a.m. and 3.30 a.m., as supporters had gathered outside the Diamond Harbour MP's Kalighat residence to mark his 39th birthday.
What reportedly began as a verbal altercation escalated into physical scuffles and stone-pelting. Banerjee alleged that BJP supporters vandalised a nearby Trinamool Congress party office and damaged his photographs, cut-outs and birthday banners.
According to police sources, several people from both groups sustained injuries. A large police contingent arrived at the scene and resorted to baton charges to disperse the rival groups and prevent further escalation.
Banerjee Stages Sit-In Protest
Following the clashes, Banerjee came out of his residence and met injured party supporters. He alleged that there was a conspiracy to attack and kill him.
The MP subsequently staged a sit-in protest outside his residence. Police personnel on duty asked him and the protesters to move away from the area, warning that their continued presence could aggravate tensions. Banerjee also reportedly entered into an argument with the officers.
He returned inside his residence at around 6.30 a.m. on Saturday following police intervention.
The gathering had begun after midnight, with Trinamool Congress workers and supporters assembling outside his Kalighat residence to celebrate his birthday.
According to allegations made by Trinamool supporters, BJP workers arrived at around 2.30 a.m. and raised slogans calling Banerjee a thief. They further claimed that the visitors tore down his photographs, cut-outs and birthday banners, triggering an argument that eventually escalated into clashes.
MP Accuses BJP and Police of Inaction
In a social media post following the incident, Banerjee accused BJP supporters of carrying out a planned attack on his residence and criticised the police and judiciary over what he described as a lack of action.
He claimed that the alleged attackers had conducted surveillance of the area for two days before the incident.
Banerjee further alleged that this was the seventh attempt on his life in the preceding six months and questioned the absence of effective police and judicial intervention.
He also criticised the judiciary, alleging that its inaction had allowed violence to continue across the state.
The Trinamool Congress MP shared photographs and video footage of the clashes alongside his statement.
