Reese Witherspoon celebrates 24 years of ‘Sweet Home Alabama’, epxressed gratitude to Dolly Parton

Reese Witherspoon has marked 24 years of *Sweet Home Alabama* by looking back on the film that became a defining moment in her career, while also expressing her gratitude to music legend Dolly Parton for allowing one of her songs to feature on the movie’s soundtrack.

The actress took to Instagram on Sunday to commemorate the anniversary, sharing a series of stills and behind-the-scenes photographs from the romantic comedy. The images featured Witherspoon alongside her co-stars, capturing moments from the production as well as the cast having fun between scenes.

Alongside the pictures, Witherspoon shared a heartfelt note reflecting on her experience making the film and the people she worked with.

“How is it possible that Sweet Home Alabama came out 24 years ago today? I will never forget that production. It was such a huge moment in my career, surrounded by the most brilliant actors, Patrick Dempsey, Josh Lucas, Candice Bergen, Melanie Lynskey, Jean Smart… and our wonderfully inspired writer/director, Andy Tennant,” she wrote.

Witherspoon also singled out Dolly Parton for making a special contribution to the film.

“It also really touched my heart that Dolly Parton let us have a song on the soundtrack,” she added.

The actress went on to recall how the movie has continued to resonate with audiences decades after its release. She said people have frequently approached her over the years to tell her that *Sweet Home Alabama* remains their favourite film of hers.

“So many people have stopped me on the street over the years to tell me this is their favorite film of mine. What’s your favorite scene?” Witherspoon wrote.

Directed by Andy Tennant, *Sweet Home Alabama* also stars Josh Lucas and Patrick Dempsey. Witherspoon plays Melanie Carmichael, a successful fashion designer living in New York who becomes engaged to Andrew Hennings, played by Dempsey. Andrew comes from a wealthy and influential political family, and Melanie appears to be on the verge of starting a new chapter in her life.

However, before she can marry him, Melanie must return to Alabama to deal with her past. She is still legally married to Jake Perry, played by Lucas, whom she secretly married when they were teenagers.

Her return to her hometown brings her face to face with the life and relationship she left behind. As Melanie attempts to resolve her unfinished business, she is forced to reconsider the choices she made while building her successful life in New York.

The film contrasts the sophisticated world of Manhattan with the close-knit atmosphere of small-town Alabama, using the two settings to explore themes of identity, ambition, marriage and the enduring pull of home.

Released in 2002, *Sweet Home Alabama* went on to become a major commercial success, earning more than $180 million worldwide. The film also further established Witherspoon as one of Hollywood’s prominent stars in the romantic-comedy genre.
