Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and state Congress president B.K. Hariprasad attended a Diwali Milan gathering hosted by Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, at his residence in New Delhi.
Both leaders shared photographs from the gathering, which brought together senior Congress functionaries, Members of Parliament and prominent leaders from different states.
Hariprasad said he extended Diwali greetings to Rahul Gandhi and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi during the event. He added that he interacted with several party leaders and exchanged views on the prevailing political situation in the country.
The gathering provided an opportunity for Congress leaders from different states to meet, exchange festive greetings and discuss current political developments, Hariprasad said.
Shivakumar backs Rahul Gandhi’s political campaign
Speaking to the media in New Delhi late Friday night, Shivakumar said Rahul Gandhi had conveyed Diwali greetings to Congress leaders and workers, emphasising the values of unity, peace and love.
Asked about Rahul Gandhi’s political campaign and the discussions at the gathering, the Karnataka Chief Minister said the campaign should not be viewed as an individual political effort.
“This is not Rahul Gandhi's personal campaign. It is the campaign of the country and the voice of the people,” Shivakumar said.
He maintained that the Congress had played a central role in securing India's freedom and establishing its democratic and constitutional framework. He added that, as Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi was working to protect the Constitution, democracy and people's rights.
Shivakumar also described the Congress party's history as closely linked to the country's history, arguing that its strength lay in ensuring equitable representation and sharing of resources among different sections of society.
CM defers comment on voter ID linkage issue
Shivakumar was also asked about linking voter identification cards with beneficiary schemes.
He declined to comment immediately, saying the matter involved several aspects that required discussion.
“We have many issues to discuss. I am also part of the government, and there are several aspects that need to be discussed on this matter. I will speak about it after the discussions,” he said.
The Diwali gathering brought together senior Congress leaders at a time of ongoing political discussions within the party and across the Opposition.
