Josh Lucas recalls ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ audition: Thought I was so bad

Josh Lucas opened up about the experience as the popular romantic comedy completed 24 years.

Lucas shared a throwback photograph on Instagram featuring himself as Jake Perry alongside Reese Witherspoon, who played Melanie Carmichael in the 2002 film.

Looking back at the role that became an important part of his career, Lucas admitted that he had no confidence in his audition at the time.

“24 years ago today Sweet Home Alabama changed my life forever. Funny thing is I thought I was so bad in my audition I called my agent to apologize for me… sending so much love to this whole great cast & crew!” he wrote.

Directed by Andy Tennant, Sweet Home Alabama also starred Patrick Dempsey, Fred Ward, Mary Kay Place, Jean Smart, Candice Bergen, Ethan Embry and Melanie Lynskey. The film borrowed its title from Lynyrd Skynyrd’s 1974 hit song.

The story centres on Melanie, a successful New York socialite who is forced to return to her Alabama hometown after years away. She needs to obtain a divorce from Jake, her childhood sweetheart and husband, whom she has been separated from for seven years.

Lucas’ Jake Perry is central to the story as Melanie is forced to confront the life and relationship she left behind.

Over the years, Lucas has built a diverse filmography spanning dramas, action films, thrillers and television. His credits include American Psycho, A Beautiful Mind, Hulk, Wonderland, Stealth, Glory Road, Poseidon, Red Dog, The Lincoln Lawyer, Ford v Ferrari, The Black Demon and The Firm. He has also appeared in television projects including The Mysteries of Laura and Yellowstone.

His recent work includes the historical crime thriller By Any Means, directed by Elegance Bratton and written by Sascha Penn.

The film features Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Mark Wahlberg, Nicole Beharie, David Strathairn and Giancarlo Esposito alongside Lucas. Set in Mississippi in 1966, it follows a young Black FBI agent who works with New York Mafia hitman Greg Scarpa while investigating the murders of civil rights leaders.

For Lucas, the anniversary of Sweet Home Alabama offered a chance to revisit a role he once feared he had failed to secure, only to discover that the audition would ultimately change the course of his career.
