Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has reiterated India’s commitment to expanding trade and investment ties with the Netherlands, focusing on maritime infrastructure, logistics efficiency, and supply.
During his visit to the European country, Goyal held discussions with stakeholders in Rotterdam’s maritime and logistics sector, interacted with members of the Indian diaspora in Amsterdam and engaged with the media, according to an official statement.
A key highlight of the visit was his tour of the Port of Rotterdam, accompanied by its Chief Executive Officer, Boudewijn Siemons.
Rotterdam Port Seen as Gateway for Indian Exports to Europe
Rotterdam, Europe’s largest port, serves as a major entry point for goods entering European markets and plays a significant role in international trade and global supply chains.
During the visit, Goyal discussed opportunities to promote port-led economic growth, improve logistics efficiency, strengthen supply chain links and expand bilateral trade and investment.
“As India modernises its existing ports and develops state-of-the-art maritime infrastructure, there is immense potential to collaborate with the Port of Rotterdam, draw on its expertise, and strengthen India-Netherlands cooperation,” Goyal said.
The discussions highlighted the Netherlands’ strategic importance in facilitating Indian exports to Europe, particularly as economic engagement between India and the European Union deepens.
India-EU Trade Agreement Could Open New Avenues
The visit also focused on the potential role of Dutch ports and logistics infrastructure in supporting trade flows between India and Europe in the context of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement.
With the agreement expected to create additional opportunities for Indian exporters, Rotterdam’s port facilities, transport networks and connectivity with European markets could help strengthen supply chains and facilitate the movement of goods.
The engagement underscored the scope for cooperation in maritime logistics and related sectors as India continues to modernise its port infrastructure and expand its international trade networks.
Goyal Interacts with Indian Community in Amsterdam
Goyal also attended an interaction with the Indian community hosted by the Embassy of India at the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam. Approximately 70 people, including business representatives and professionals, participated in the gathering.
According to the official statement, the meeting provided an opportunity to engage with members of the diaspora and reaffirm their role in strengthening India-Netherlands relations.
The interaction highlighted the Indian community’s contribution to bilateral economic, cultural and people-to-people ties, while also exploring opportunities for closer cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
The visit formed part of India’s broader efforts to strengthen economic partnerships in Europe, with maritime connectivity, investment and trade facilitation emerging as key areas of engagement with the Netherlands.
