Crude oil prices declined by up to 1 per cent on Tuesday, extending losses for a second consecutive session as diplomatic efforts involving Iran raised hopes of easing tensions in the Middle East and reducing the immediate risk of supply disruptions.
Despite the decline, oil prices remained near six-month highs amid persistent security concerns across the region.
Brent crude futures, the international benchmark, fell as much as 1.17 per cent, or $1.36, to $114.45 per barrel. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude dropped by more than 1 per cent, or $1.16, to $100.60 per barrel.
Diplomatic efforts ease immediate supply concerns
The decline followed high-level talks in Tehran involving representatives from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan, who met Iranian officials to discuss ways to ease regional tensions.
Saudi officials said the visit was intended to establish open channels for negotiations and prevent a renewed military escalation. Reports indicated that the four countries agreed to continue dialogue aimed at strengthening cooperation on peace and security.
Analysts said the diplomatic engagement had eased some immediate concerns about oil supply disruptions. The recovery of Middle Eastern crude exports towards levels seen before the conflict has also helped temper fears of a prolonged supply shortage.
However, they cautioned that the possibility of further geopolitical escalation continued to pose an upside risk to prices.
Middle East security risks keep oil prices elevated
The outlook for crude remains uncertain as renewed attacks and regional tensions continue to threaten energy infrastructure and shipping routes.
Iran-aligned Houthi forces have reportedly launched renewed attacks targeting Saudi Arabia, limiting the scope for a sustained decline in oil prices.
The conflict has also heightened concerns surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime passage that handled approximately 20 per cent of global energy shipments before hostilities began in February.
Any disruption to traffic through the strait could affect crude oil and other energy supplies moving from the Gulf to international markets, making developments in the region a key driver of price movements.
Iranian attacks on oil tankers near the strait pushed Brent crude above $117 per barrel last week, its highest level since April. Prices briefly tested the $117 mark again on Monday before settling lower.
Analysts expect continued volatility
Market analysts said crude prices were likely to remain volatile, with developments in Middle Eastern supply flows and the course of diplomatic negotiations determining the next direction.
For domestic commodity traders, analysts identified an immediate support range of ₹9,300–₹9,060 for crude oil futures on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), describing the zone as important for sustaining market momentum.
While diplomatic progress could ease the risk premium built into oil prices, any renewed military escalation or disruption to regional exports could reverse the recent decline.
The market therefore remains caught between hopes of de-escalation and persistent supply-side risks, with developments around Iran, Saudi Arabia and the Strait of Hormuz likely to remain central to the near-term outlook.
