Asian Games: Unbeaten India Face South Korea in Women’s Hockey Semifinal With History in Sight

The defending silver medallists have enjoyed a dominant run through Pool B, winning all five of their matches and scoring 66 goals. However, the semifinal against South Korea is expected to provide a much sterner examination at the Kawasaki Juko Stadium.

India opened their campaign with a 19-0 win over Uzbekistan before recording similarly emphatic victories against Indonesia and Thailand, winning 17-1 and 20-1 respectively. Their toughest pool-stage encounter came against hosts Japan, whom they defeated 3-1, before finishing the group phase with a 7-0 victory over Singapore.

South Korea advanced from Pool A in second place after winning four of their five matches. Their only defeat came against China, who secured a 3-0 victory. South Korea's biggest win of the tournament was an 8-0 result against Bangladesh.

India’s attacking options have been central to their impressive campaign. Drag-flick specialist Deepika leads the tournament's scoring charts with 21 goals, while Navneet Kaur has scored 10, including seven from open play.

Rutuja Dadaso Pisal has added seven goals, with Lalremsiami and Ishika contributing six and five respectively. Deepika's ability to contribute both from open play and penalty corners gives India an additional attacking outlet, while Navneet can also be used during set-piece situations.

India also have considerable experience in goal. Captain Savita remains a key presence between the posts, while Bichu Devi has also produced strong performances during the tournament. Both goalkeepers could face a more demanding test against a South Korean side featuring midfielder Seungae Park, who has scored eight goals so far.

India head coach Sjoerd Marijne acknowledged that the semifinal would bring a significant increase in the level of competition after a relatively comfortable pool campaign.

“For us, training is the way to stay in rhythm… Everybody knows what is expected from them. We have played opponents against whom the challenge was not that big, except Japan. Now it’s a big challenge in the semi-finals of the Asian Games and we are looking forward to play against South Korea,” Marijne said.

India's last Asian Games gold in women’s hockey came in 1982. Since then, the team has been unable to reclaim the continental title, making Wednesday's semifinal a significant opportunity in their pursuit of another gold.

A victory over South Korea would take India into the gold-medal match and leave them just one win away from ending their long wait for the Asian Games title.

The semifinal is scheduled to begin at 7 pm local time (3:30 pm IST) on Wednesday. India enter the contest with a perfect five-match record, but their performance across the next 60 minutes will determine whether their impressive campaign continues into the final.
