President Droupadi Murmu congratulated Indian archer Neeraj Chauhan after he secured the bronze medal in the men's individual recurve event at the 2026 Asian Games in Okazaki on Saturday.
Neeraj defeated compatriot Dhiraj Bommadevara in the bronze-medal playoff, with the all-Indian contest ensuring that India secured another place on the individual recurve podium.
Murmu described the result as a significant achievement for Indian archery and said the presence of two Indian archers in the bronze-medal match reflected the country's growing strength in the discipline.
She congratulated Neeraj for his medal and wished him further success in his career, while noting that his podium finish added to India's strong showing in individual recurve archery at the Games.
Neeraj's bronze gave India a remarkable overall archery campaign, with the country finishing ahead of South Korea in the medal tally for a second successive Asian Games. Indian archers collected nine medals in total, comprising five gold, two silver and two bronze.
India had also won nine archery medals at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, including five gold, while South Korea finished with 11 medals at those Games.
Seventeen-year-old Kumkum Mohod was among the standout performers for India in Okazaki. She created history by becoming the country's first woman to win an individual recurve gold medal after defeating South Korea's Oh Yejin in a shoot-off to prevail 6-5.
Kumkum also won gold in the women's recurve team event alongside Kirti Sharma and Ankita Bhakat, helping India secure its first-ever gold in the discipline. She added a mixed recurve silver with Dhiraj Bommadevara.
India's success extended to the compound events as well. The men's team of Sahil Jadhav, Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru and Kushal Dalal won gold after defeating China in the final.
The women's compound team of Chikitha Taniparthi, Jyothi Surekha and Prithika Pradeep also defeated China to claim gold.
Sahil Jadhav and Chikitha Taniparthi completed India's sweep of the compound team events by winning the mixed team gold after overcoming South Korea in the final.
The nine-medal haul underlined India's strong showing across both recurve and compound archery at the 2026 Asian Games.
