For India all-rounder Naman Dhir, the third ODI against the West Indies at the New PCA Stadium carries a significance that goes far beyond cricket, with his parents set to watch him play for the national team
The Faridkot-based cricketer recalled how his career nearly took a different direction during the Covid-19 pandemic. After struggling to secure opportunities following his time in Punjab's Under-16 setup, Dhir had considered moving to Canada, where his sisters live.
It was his father's encouragement that convinced him to give cricket another year.
Dhir said his father urged him to put everything into one more season. The decision proved crucial as he earned a Ranji Trophy opportunity, followed by an IPL selection, setting his professional career on a new path.
Now, he is preparing to represent India at his home venue, with family members, friends and people who have followed his career expected to be in the stands.
Dhir said playing at the venue where he began his cricketing journey would make the occasion particularly memorable, especially with his parents present.
The all-rounder is also eager to make an impact with the bat after not getting an opportunity to showcase his batting in the first two matches of the series in Thiruvananthapuram and Guwahati.
However, Dhir said he was equally comfortable with the situation if India's established top order continued to dominate. India have already secured the series, and the performances of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill have played a major role in the team's control of the contest.
Dhir also clarified that he was fully fit after suffering cramps in the heat rather than an injury.
With the series already decided, the third ODI could provide Dhir with an opportunity to contribute in front of his family and a home crowd, marking another significant moment in a career that almost took a very different path.
