India's tennis campaign at the 2026 Asian Games ended without a medal after Sumit Nagal was beaten 4-6, 4-6 by China's Wu Yibing in the men's singles quarterfinal at the Higashiyama Park Tennis Center on Thursday.

Nagal's defeat marked the first time since the 1986 Asian Games that India have failed to win a tennis medal at the continental event.

The Indian No. 1 was unable to overcome Wu, having previously lost to the Chinese player at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Shanghai. Nagal struggled to make the most of his first serve during Thursday's contest, landing 66 per cent of first serves in play. He won 62 per cent of points behind his first serve and 59 per cent on his second, but was broken three times during the match.

Nagal's exit followed the earlier elimination of Suresh Dhakshineswar, who lost 3-6, 4-6 to Chinese Taipei's Tseng Chun-hsin in the men's singles round of 16.

India's men's doubles campaign also ended without a medal, marking the country's first such result in the event since the 1998 Asian Games.

Yuki Bhambri and Dhakshineswar Suresh were beaten in the quarterfinals by Chinese Taipei's Ray Ho and Hsu Yu-hsiou. The other Indian pair, N Sriram Balaji and Anirudh Chandrasekar, also bowed out at the same stage after losing to China's Jiang Fumin and Zhang Tianhui in a closely contested tie-break.

The women's doubles pairing of Ankita Raina and Rutuja Bhosale suffered a first-round defeat against Kazakhstan's Anna Danilina and Yulia Putintseva.

India also failed to progress in the mixed doubles. Bhambri and Rutuja were eliminated in the round of 16 by Chinese Taipei's Hsieh Su-wei and Tseng Chun-hsin, while Balaji and Ankita Raina were knocked out in the round of 32 by Hong Kong, China's Eudice Chong and Kairan Thompson.

The disappointing campaign comes four years after India secured two tennis medals at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games. Rohan Bopanna and Rutuja Bhosale won gold in mixed doubles, while Ramkumar Ramanathan and Saketh Myneni claimed silver in men's doubles.

India have won 34 tennis medals across their Asian Games history, including 10 gold medals. The 2026 edition, however, ends with the country unable to add to that tally.
