YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) MP Maddila Gurumoorthy has written to President Droupadi Murmu and Andhra Pradesh Governor S. Abdul Nazeer, seeking an independent inquiry into alleged lapses by the State Election Commission.
In his representation, the Tirupati MP raised concerns over alleged violence, intimidation of Opposition candidates, destruction of nomination papers, police interference and the failure of election authorities to ensure a fair opportunity for candidates to participate in the electoral process.
Gurumoorthy cited reported incidents in Punganur, Pulivendula, Kadapa, Proddatur, Mydukur, Badvel, Rayachoti, Tirupati and other locations across Andhra Pradesh, which is governed by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
Allegations of Violence and Nomination Obstruction
The MP referred to the alleged attack on Rajampet MP P.V. Midhun Reddy, incidents involving vehicles being set on fire, the reported house arrest of Opposition leaders and claims that candidates were prevented from submitting their nomination papers.
He also cited figures indicating that 222 wards across seven municipalities had no YSRCP candidates contesting because, according to the party’s allegations, prospective candidates were obstructed from filing nominations.
Additionally, Gurumoorthy referred to complaints involving 1,345 MPTC and ZPTC candidates who allegedly faced obstruction during the nomination process.
These allegations formed the basis of his demand for an independent examination of the election authorities’ response and the circumstances surrounding the reported incidents.
Supreme Court Directions and SEC’s Response Under Scrutiny
Gurumoorthy also referred to Supreme Court directions asking the SEC to examine complaints and provide protection. He questioned why extensions for filing nominations were granted in only four Urban Local Bodies, while several other municipalities where similar problems were alleged did not receive comparable relief.
The MP has called for an inquiry into the SEC’s handling of complaints, police deployment, alleged irregularities in nominations and compliance with the Supreme Court’s directions.
He also sought the preservation of CCTV footage, nomination documents, police reports and other electronic evidence that could help establish the sequence of events.
Seeks Central Security and Judicial Oversight
Among the measures proposed by Gurumoorthy are the deployment of central security forces, fresh opportunities for affected candidates to file nominations and independent judicial oversight of the election process.
He further urged the President and the Governor to consider appropriate constitutional action against officials, including the State Election Commissioner, if an impartial inquiry establishes misconduct or serious administrative failures.
The allegations raised by the YSRCP MP remain subject to independent verification. The representation seeks an examination of the election process and the actions of the authorities responsible for overseeing it.
