Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversaries, recalling their contributions to India's freedom movement.
Addressing a Gandhi Jayanti programme in Lucknow, Adityanath said Gandhi's role in India's independence movement continues to be remembered around the world. He reflected on how Gandhi's simple appearance and reliance on non-violent methods became symbolic of the wider freedom struggle.
The Chief Minister said Gandhi's ideas continue to influence India's development and urged people to incorporate cleanliness and Swadeshi into their everyday lives.
Highlighting the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Adityanath said the campaign had contributed not only to greater awareness of sanitation and public health but also to discussions around women's dignity.
He called on citizens to treat cleanliness as a regular part of their lives and promote the use of indigenous products.
Adityanath also recalled the significance of Khadi, referring to the interest and enthusiasm surrounding garments from Gandhi Ashrams during his childhood.
Speaking about Gandhi's concept of Gram Swaraj, the Chief Minister said villages should form an important foundation for self-reliance and development. He said the Uttar Pradesh government had established Gram Sachivalayas across villages as part of efforts to strengthen local administration and deliver services at the grassroots.
The Chief Minister also paid tribute to Lal Bahadur Shastri, India's second Prime Minister, remembering him for his simplicity and contribution to the country's public life.
Referring to Shastri's famous "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan" slogan, Adityanath said it captured the importance of both national security and agricultural production in India's pursuit of self-reliance.
He recalled that Shastri gave the slogan to the country during the 1965 period and linked it to India's subsequent progress in foodgrain production and agricultural self-sufficiency.
As part of this year's Gandhi Jayanti observances, the Uttar Pradesh government has also announced a 25 per cent discount on Khadi products until January 30, 2027.
