A 26-year-old woman engineer was allegedly sexually assaulted at gunpoint by an unidentified masked man inside her rented apartment in Bhubaneswar, police said on Thursday.

The incident reportedly took place on Wednesday night in the Nayapalli police station area. Commissionerate Police registered a case after receiving a complaint from the woman and have launched an investigation.

The woman, who is reportedly from Jagatsinghpur district, works as an engineer for a private company in Bhubaneswar. She was living in the apartment with her elder sister, while the property owners reportedly occupied the first floor.

According to police, the woman told authorities that an unknown man entered her rented accommodation and allegedly sexually assaulted her. The accused reportedly threatened her with what appeared to be a gun, although police said it was yet to be established whether the weapon was genuine or a toy gun.

Senior police officers, including Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police Saravana Vivek M, visited the location after being informed about the incident and began examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault.

Police said the woman's statement has been recorded and that she is undergoing a medical examination as part of the investigation.

Investigators are also reviewing CCTV footage from the apartment complex and surrounding areas in Nayapalli in an effort to identify and trace the suspect.

The incident has caused concern among residents in the locality, with several people calling for the accused to be arrested quickly and prosecuted according to law. Residents have also urged the authorities to increase police patrolling in the area to strengthen security.

The incident comes amid concerns over crimes against women in Odisha. Responding to a question in the state Assembly, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi recently said that 1,606 rape cases had been registered in Odisha between January 1 and July 31, 2026.

Assembly data also showed that 21,069 cases relating to different offences against women were registered across the state during the same period.
