The White House has described India as one of the United States' strongest allies, while highlighting the relationship between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a factor.
White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said the partnership between the two countries had been reinforced by Trump and Modi's close relationship. Her remarks came in response to a question about Modi's 25 years in public life and his ties with the US President.
Modi completed 25 years in public office on October 7, marking the anniversary of his first assumption of office as Gujarat Chief Minister in 2001. He remained in the post until May 2014, when he became Prime Minister following the BJP's victory in the Lok Sabha elections.
The White House statement comes as India and the US continue to deepen cooperation across defence, technology, trade and strategic affairs, while also managing differences on trade and other policy matters. The two countries do not have a formal mutual defence treaty.
Modi's tenure has also coincided with a broader expansion of India's international engagement, including stronger ties with major global powers and an increased diplomatic focus on the interests of developing countries and the Global South.
Several international leaders congratulated Modi on completing 25 years in public office, describing the milestone as an uncommon achievement in a democracy and reflecting the confidence Indian voters place in him.
Modi thanked the leaders for their greetings and said he remained committed to further strengthening India's partnerships and cooperation with countries worldwide.
