West Bengal Assembly Speaker Rathindra Bose was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata on Friday night after experiencing severe chest pain. His condition is currently reported to be stable, and he remains under medical observation.
Bose was taken to the hospital near the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass after his health deteriorated shortly after returning home from a busy day of programmes at the state Assembly.
He had attended events marking Gandhi Jayanti and the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri within the Assembly premises on Friday and also participated in other engagements during the day. Family members took him to hospital after he complained of intense chest pain.
Doctors conducted a series of medical examinations after his admission and began treatment promptly. Hospital sources said his condition subsequently improved and that he is continuing to be monitored by a team of doctors.
Bose became Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly in May 2026, when he was elected unopposed. He represents the Cooch Behar South constituency and entered the Assembly for the first time in the 2026 elections.
A chartered accountant by profession, Bose had been associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh before entering active politics through the BJP. He defeated Trinamool Congress candidate Abhijit De Bhowmik in the Cooch Behar South constituency in the 2026 Assembly election.
His appointment as Speaker marked a departure from the convention of selecting a legislator with a legal background for the post. He is also the first legislator from North Bengal to hold the position, according to reports on his election as Speaker.
Bose recently travelled to Atlanta, where he interacted with members of the Bengali diaspora on issues including West Bengal's economic prospects, investment opportunities, education and the state's future. He also discussed the importance of strengthening legislative debate and encouraging dialogue between the Treasury and Opposition benches.
For now, Bose remains under medical supervision in Kolkata as doctors continue to assess his condition.
