A wanted criminal carrying a reward of ₹25,000 was arrested after being injured in an exchange of fire with police in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad district, officials said on Monday.

The accused, identified as Amjad, 25, allegedly opened fire at a police team while attempting to escape during vehicle checking in the Shalimar Garden area. He sustained a bullet injury to his right leg when police retaliated, according to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Atul Kumar.

Police recovered a .315-bore pistol, cartridges, a stolen scooter and a mobile phone from his possession.

Suspect Allegedly Opens Fire During Chase

According to the ACP, the incident occurred during the intervening night of October 25 and 26, when the in-charge of the DLF police outpost and a team of personnel were patrolling and checking vehicles near Bhagat Singh Chowk.

During the operation, officers noticed a suspicious person riding a scooter from the DLF area. On seeing the police, the rider allegedly turned around and attempted to flee.

The scooter reportedly fell during the escape attempt, after which the suspect ran towards a lane leading to a nearby cemetery.

Police said the suspect opened fire at the pursuing personnel, allegedly intending to kill them. The team returned fire in self-defence, injuring him in the right leg, following which he was apprehended.

Accused Wanted in Multiple Criminal Cases

Amjad, the son of Chand Mohammad, is a resident of Loni in Ghaziabad. According to ACP Kumar, 16 criminal cases have been registered against him at various police stations in the district.

A reward of ₹25,000 had been announced for his arrest. He was wanted in a case registered at Ankur Vihar police station and had allegedly been evading arrest for an extended period.

Further examination of the recovered scooter revealed that it had been stolen from the jurisdiction of Delhi’s Wazirabad police station, officials said.

Investigation Underway

Following his arrest, Amjad was taken to a hospital for preliminary treatment for his injury.

Police said further legal proceedings were underway and that the investigation would continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and examine the cases linked to the accused.

ACP Atul Kumar said police would continue taking action against criminal activity in the district.
