A wanted criminal, identified as Shubham alias Jhamo, was injured in an exchange of fire between police and alleged criminals near a four-lane National Highway in Bihar’s Patna district on Wednesday morning, police said.
According to officials, a joint team of local police and the Special Task Force (STF) had received information about Shubham’s presence in an area falling under the jurisdiction of Fatuha police station. Acting on the tip-off, personnel reached the location and cordoned off the area.
Police alleged that Shubham opened fire after realising he had been surrounded, prompting the team to retaliate. During the exchange, a bullet struck him in the leg, leaving him injured at the scene.
The police took him into custody and shifted him to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) for treatment. He is reportedly out of danger and remains under medical supervision. Officials said they would question him once his medical condition permits.
Investigators are examining weapons reportedly recovered from the scene and are probing whether other suspects were involved. Police are also attempting to establish what Shubham was allegedly planning in the area when the encounter took place.
The incident comes amid Patna Police’s reported crackdown on wanted criminals under the campaign known as ‘Operation Langda’, which has involved suspects sustaining leg injuries during police encounters.
According to police records cited in reports, Shubham is linked to several criminal cases, including murder, attempted murder and highway robberies. Further details about the cases registered against him, the circumstances of the firing and the weapons recovered are awaited as the investigation continues.
