US Republican Congressman Rich McCormick has urged the Trump administration to investigate suspected fraud and abuse of the H-1B visa programme in the Atlanta metropolitan area.
McCormick, who represents Georgia's 7th Congressional District, which covers much of northern Metro Atlanta, sent a letter to Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Labour Secretary Keith Sonderling and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin seeking additional federal investigative and enforcement resources for the region.
His district includes a significant concentration of technology, healthcare, engineering and other industries that employ highly skilled workers. McCormick described North Metro Atlanta as a suspected hotspot for H-1B-related fraud and called for federal agencies to examine allegations involving employers in the area.
McCormick said his concerns were based on reports from constituents, discussions with local stakeholders and recent federal investigations and enforcement actions involving organisations in and around his district.
He alleged that some employers may be using fraudulent or abusive methods to obtain H-1B workers at below-market wages. He also warned that foreign employees dependent on continued employment to maintain their immigration status could be particularly vulnerable to exploitation and poor working conditions.
According to McCormick, such practices could also place downward pressure on wages and create additional competition for American workers, including recent college graduates.
The congressman said Metro Atlanta's economic expansion and its major international airport could make the region attractive to employers seeking to exploit weaknesses in the immigration system. He called on federal authorities to closely examine allegations and take action against those found violating H-1B rules.
McCormick has asked the Departments of Homeland Security, Labor and State, along with other agencies involved in immigration enforcement, to commit significant resources to investigating suspected H-1B fraud in the region.
He also offered to cooperate with the administration on potential legislation aimed at strengthening enforcement and improving coordination between federal authorities, Georgia agencies and local law enforcement.
The H-1B visa programme allows US employers to temporarily hire foreign professionals for specialised occupations. It is widely used by technology and other high-skilled industries and has been particularly important for Indian professionals seeking employment in the United States.
