Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju, Arjun Ram Meghwal and Pralhad Joshi were among several leaders who participated in cleanliness drives across Delhi on Thursday as part of the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ campaign.

Rijiju visited Navyug School in New Delhi, where he took part in the campaign and interacted with students. He said efforts were being made to give renewed momentum to the Swachh Bharat Mission, which was launched nearly 12 years ago.

“It has been almost twelve years since the Swachh Bharat Mission was launched. When the Prime Minister announced it from the Red Fort, various programmes related to the Swachh Bharat Mission were organised across the country. Now, we are trying to further strengthen the campaign in a renewed manner,” Rijiju said.

The Union Minister said he was encouraged by the awareness among students at the NDMC-run school regarding cleanliness and civic responsibility.

At Safdarjung Tomb, Meghwal participated in a ‘shramdaan’ activity organised under the Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign. He said two departments under the Ministry of Law and Justice had taken part in the cleanliness initiative at the historic monument.

Joshi visited Delhi University’s Gargi College, where he joined the cleanliness programme, swept parts of the campus and planted a sapling under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative. He also interacted with students during the visit.

Under the leadership of Delhi BJP president and Union Minister Harsh Malhotra, cleanliness drives were conducted at around 2,500 locations across the national capital. One such drive was held near Raja Ram Kohli Marg and Sai Bhawan in Geeta Colony.

Union Minister C.R. Patil stressed that cleanliness should be incorporated into everyday life rather than treated as an occasional exercise.

“Cleanliness should not be something that we do only occasionally. We have to maintain cleanliness every day, just as we clean our homes every day. We should not expect others to clean up after us when we are the ones creating the mess,” Patil said.

He urged people to avoid littering and ensure that waste is disposed of at designated locations.

Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called upon citizens to participate in the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan for nearly a month, from October 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, to October 31, the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Reddy appealed to people across the country to participate in the campaign and contribute to cleanliness efforts.

A separate cleanliness initiative was organised in the R.K. Puram Assembly constituency under the National Disaster Response Force’s ‘One Day, One Hour, Together’ campaign.

NDRF Director General Piyush Anand said the programme brought together government officials, civic workers, elected representatives and students.

“We are all conducting this campaign together. The MCD Deputy Director is also with us, along with the MLA from this area, MCD health workers, children and directors as well,” Anand said.

He said the participation of different sections of society reflected a broader approach to civic administration and public engagement.

Delhi Minister Ashish Sood also joined a cleanliness drive at Jeevan Park in the Janakpuri Assembly constituency.

Sood said the Delhi government and agencies associated with it were conducting a major cleanliness campaign from October 1 to October 17.

“Today, all elected representatives have come out to contribute through shramdaan. Tomorrow, all MLAs and ministers will launch this campaign across Delhi’s 12 zones along with the youth of Delhi,” he said.
