United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres may have discussed the detention of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan with Army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir during his recent visit to Pakistan

Asked whether Guterres had raised Khan's detention with Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Dujarric said the UN was closely following the situation. He indicated that all relevant issues were discussed during the Secretary-General's meetings with Pakistani officials.

Guterres met Munir during the visit, with the two also discussing the threat posed by terrorism. The UN chief also met separately with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari.

The meetings came as supporters of Khan marched toward Islamabad, demanding his release and calling for the protection of democratic rights. The demonstration began in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday, with around 5,000 people initially taking part and additional supporters joining the march along the route.

Khan, who leads the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was removed as prime minister in 2022 following a parliamentary vote. He was arrested the following year, and his party was later barred from contesting the 2024 general election, which led to Shehbaz Sharif becoming prime minister.

Khan's supporters have alleged that his health has deteriorated during his imprisonment and have continued to demand his release.

Guterres' meeting with Pakistan's military chief was also notable, given the prominent role the country's military establishment plays in national affairs. During the UN chief's visit, discussions with Pakistani interlocutors covered a range of issues, including security and terrorism.
