Kerala Police have invoked provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against Ebin Paul, the prime accused in the October 12 arson attack near the historic Kadavumbhagam Synagogue in Ernakulam.
Sections 16 and 18 of the UAPA, which deal with terrorist acts and conspiracy to commit terrorist acts, have been added against the accused, marking a significant development in the investigation into the fire incident at a nursery outside the synagogue.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) is investigating whether Paul allegedly acted under the instructions of an unidentified individual referred to as 'Boss'. Investigators are also examining references made by the accused to another person named Vikram, whose identity and possible connection to the alleged handler remain unclear.
Police are attempting to determine whether the alleged handler is a real individual operating from abroad and whether other people were involved in planning or directing the incidents.
**Digital Evidence Under Scrutiny**
During questioning, Paul reportedly claimed that he received instructions through phone calls and digital platforms. Investigators are verifying these claims through forensic analysis of his mobile phones and other electronic devices.
The examination is expected to help establish the nature of the communications, identify individuals who may have been in contact with the accused and determine whether any payments were made in connection with the alleged attacks.
Authorities are also examining whether Paul's alleged involvement in other arson incidents in Muvattupuzha is connected to the synagogue case.
These incidents reportedly include an attempted fire at a locked house and an attack on a used-car showroom. Investigators are working to establish whether the incidents were isolated acts or part of a coordinated sequence.
**Investigation Extends Beyond Kerala**
The SIT has expanded its inquiries to Pune, where Paul studied, to gather information about his background and identify any possible connections relevant to the investigation.
Police are examining whether an external network influenced or directed his alleged actions. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) and other central agencies have also gathered information relating to the case.
The incident has drawn particular attention because the Kadavumbhagam Synagogue is among Kerala's historic Jewish places of worship.
Investigators are now concentrating on identifying the alleged handler, verifying the digital evidence and establishing the motive behind the attack.
Paul remains in judicial custody. Further questioning is expected as the forensic examination progresses and investigators assess the evidence collected so far.
The allegations of a wider conspiracy remain under investigation, and the identities and roles of any other individuals involved have yet to be established.
