Two young women were killed and several others were injured in a collision involving two cars in Tavarekere village limits of Sira taluk in Karnataka’s Tumakuru district early Monday morning.
Police have identified the deceased as Nisarga, 20, and Roopa, 21. Both were travelling from Vijayapura in north Karnataka to Bengaluru to attend a job interview after completing their Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) degrees.
According to police, the accident occurred around 5 a.m. within the jurisdiction of Tavarekere police station.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the car carrying the women hit a road divider after its driver, Pavan, allegedly lost control of the vehicle. The car reportedly spun into the air before landing on the road and colliding with another car approaching from the opposite direction.
Several Injured in Head-On Collision
Four people, including Pavan, were travelling in the first car. The driver and another woman sustained serious injuries in the collision.
The second car was also carrying four occupants, all of whom were injured in the accident.
Emergency services shifted the injured to the district hospital in Tumakuru for treatment. Police have initiated an investigation to establish the circumstances leading to the collision.
Recent Road Accidents Raise Safety Concerns
The accident comes amid a series of fatal road crashes reported across Karnataka in recent days.
On October 25, a boy aged around 13 died after the car in which he was travelling collided with a truck at Goonadka on the Mani-Mysuru National Highway near Sullia. Four other occupants of the car were injured and taken to a hospital in Sullia.
In another incident on October 16, a 16-year-old boy driving a car with two minor friends reportedly crashed into the rear of a CNG lorry on National Highway 48 near Anagodu in Davanagere district. The driver died, while his companions sustained serious injuries.
Earlier, on October 18, a Class 10 student identified as Hemanth died after a speeding car allegedly entered a one-way road and struck the motorcycle on which he was riding pillion.
Police are continuing their investigation into the Tumakuru collision.
