Two young men were killed, and another was critically injured in a head-on collision between a motorcycle and a scooter at Jhongkar crossing in Siliguri, north Bengal, on Monday.

The accident occurred on the old bridge near the crossing, leaving both vehicles severely damaged. The injured man, who was travelling on the scooter with one of the deceased, is undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of a private hospital in Matigara.

According to local residents, one of the deceased was identified as Arijit Pramanik, a resident of Goyerkata who had come to Siliguri to visit relatives during the Durga Puja festivities. The other victim, Shankar Singh, was a 17-year-old resident of Ward No. 3 under the Siliguri Municipal Corporation.

Pramanik was reportedly riding his motorcycle towards Jhongkar crossing from the Air View crossing side when it collided head-on with the scooter travelling in the opposite direction. Singh and his friend were returning home on the scooter.

The force of the impact was severe, and both Pramanik and Singh died at the scene. Their vehicles were left badly mangled.

Personnel from the Khalpara police outpost reached the spot after receiving information about the accident. They rescued the injured scooter passenger and rushed him to a private hospital in Matigara, where his condition was reported to be critical.

Police recovered the bodies and initially took them to Siliguri District Hospital before transferring them to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

Investigators suspect that excessive speed may have caused the riders to lose control on the relatively empty road in the early morning. However, police have launched a detailed investigation to establish the exact circumstances that led to the collision.

The accident has cast a pall of grief over Siliguri during the Durga Puja celebrations. Residents and the victims’ families were left shocked by the deaths, which occurred on the morning of Ashtami.
