Two people died after slabs of a building collapsed during construction work in the Milan Garden area of Harsh Vihar in Northeast Delhi, officials said on Monday.
The victims were trapped beneath the debris following the collapse. Rescue teams managed to pull them out and rushed them to a hospital, where doctors declared them dead.
According to the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), two fire tenders were dispatched to the site after receiving information about the incident at around 6.40 p.m. on Sunday.
Existing Roof Gives Way During Construction
The collapse occurred while workers were constructing an additional floor above an old house. During the work, a section of the existing roof reportedly gave way, triggering the collapse of the newly laid slab above it.
Two people were caught beneath the rubble, prompting an emergency rescue operation.
Teams from the Delhi Police and Delhi Fire Service reached the site, while personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Civil Defence joined the efforts.
Heavy machinery, including a JCB excavator, was deployed to remove the debris and reach the trapped individuals. Both victims were eventually recovered and taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Delhi Ministers Visit Accident Site
Delhi Cabinet Ministers Kapil Mishra and Ashish Sood also visited the site to assess the situation and review the rescue operation.
Rescue personnel continued working through the night to clear the remaining debris, while authorities began examining the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
Further details about the deceased and the precise cause of the incident were awaited.
Earlier Building Collapse in Seemapuri
The incident comes after another building collapse in North Delhi’s Seemapuri area earlier in October, when part of a multi-storey structure gave way, raising fears that several people could be trapped beneath the debris.
The Delhi Fire Service had deployed two fire vehicles to that site. The Delhi Traffic Police also issued an advisory on X, reporting the collapse and confirming that rescue teams were working at the location.
Traffic movement was affected around Seemapuri Gol Chakkar, DLF Bhopura and adjoining roads following the earlier incident.
