Members of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) women's wing have filed complaints at five police stations in Tiruchi, alleging that DMK leader and former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin made derogatory remarks.
Police said complaints were submitted at several stations, including Srirangam, Thillai Nagar and the Government Hospital police station. The stations issued Community Service Register (CSR) receipts acknowledging the petitions.
The complainants alleged that Stalin used insulting expressions while campaigning in Dharapuram for DMK candidate Sukanya. They sought action against him, arguing that the remarks demeaned a woman candidate contesting an election.
According to the petitions, Stalin allegedly made comments about Sathyabama's name and appearance during his campaign speech. The complainants described the remarks as offensive and humiliating and urged the authorities to examine the speech and initiate appropriate action.
The controversy has also led to a separate complaint by a group of lawyers, who approached the Election Commission, the Tamil Nadu Director General of Police, the Chennai Police Commissioner and the returning officer of the constituency.
The lawyers argued that a woman candidate should not be subjected to personal ridicule or insulting remarks during an election campaign. Their representations sought action against Stalin over the comments attributed to him.
The issuance of CSR receipts confirms that the complaints were received by the police. However, police have not provided details of any further action on the petitions.
The dispute relates to campaigning for the October 6 Assembly by-elections in Dharapuram in Tiruppur district and Madurantakam in Chengalpattu district. Both constituencies are reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates.
In Dharapuram, Sathyabama contested the election as the TVK candidate against DMK's Sukanya, AIADMK's Bhanumathi, CPI's Lakshmanan and Naam Tamilar Katchi's Karthika, among other candidates.
The alleged remarks triggered objections from TVK supporters, who accused the campaign of crossing the line into personal attacks against their candidate. The complaints submitted to the police and election authorities centre on the language allegedly used by Stalin during his speech.
The petitions have brought the campaign exchange under scrutiny after polling, with the complainants seeking accountability over remarks they consider insulting to Sathyabama.
Any further proceedings will depend on the authorities examining the complaints and the speech referred to in the petitions.
