Tripura is preparing to source additional electricity from neighbouring Mizoram during the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations as the state anticipates a sharp rise in power consumption, Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath said.
The five-day festival begins on October 16, with peak electricity demand in Tripura expected to climb to between 370 MW and 380 MW, compared with the state's usual requirement of around 310-330 MW.
Nath reviewed the state's preparations during a meeting at Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), where officials discussed measures to maintain uninterrupted power supply throughout the festival.
The minister said Tripura and Mizoram have an arrangement under which the two states support each other with electricity during periods of heightened demand. Tripura supplies power to Mizoram during the Christmas period in December, while Mizoram provides additional electricity to Tripura during Durga Puja.
TSECL Managing Director Biswajit Basu and senior officials attended the review meeting, which focused on strengthening the state's power infrastructure and response systems ahead of the festival.
Nath directed officials to take preventive measures against technical failures and remain prepared to address disruptions quickly. He also called for a stronger response mechanism to ensure consumer complaints and faults are dealt with without unnecessary delays.
With large crowds expected at Puja celebrations across the state, the minister stressed the need for sufficient manpower, equipment and field teams throughout the festive period.
He also called for close coordination between senior officials and ground-level personnel so that technical problems can be identified and resolved promptly.
Nath said round-the-clock preparedness would be particularly important in areas hosting major Puja celebrations and large public gatherings.
A stable electricity supply will be essential for Puja pandals, markets, public spaces and other key facilities operating during the festival, he said.
The minister urged TSECL employees to remain alert and responsive throughout the celebrations and work collectively to minimise inconvenience to consumers.
Nath expressed confidence that advance planning, coordination with Mizoram and continuous monitoring would enable Tripura to handle the expected increase in demand and maintain reliable electricity supplies during Durga Puja.
