The Tripura State Election Commission (SEC) has begun preparations for elections to 21 urban local bodies, including the Agartala Municipal Corporation, officials said on Thursday.
Tripura State Election Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Chakraborty held an initial preparatory meeting with Director General of Police G.S. Rao and senior civil and police officials. He directed the authorities to take all necessary measures to ensure that the urban local body elections are conducted smoothly and transparently.
Chakraborty said the terms of all 21 urban local bodies, including the Agartala Municipal Corporation, will end on December 9.
Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Manchak Ipper, District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police from all eight districts, along with senior civil and security officials, attended the meeting at the State Guest House.
Ahead of the municipal and Nagar Panchayat elections, the Urban Development Department has published the final list of polling stations. The list includes 783 polling stations covering the Agartala Municipal Corporation, 13 Municipal Councils and seven Nagar Panchayats.
The SEC said the final electoral rolls will be published on October 15, following the completion of the process for claims and objections to the draft rolls on October 8.
DGP G.S. Rao said Central Armed Police Force personnel would not be deployed for the urban local body elections. Instead, adequate personnel from the state police and Tripura State Rifles will be deployed to ensure that the polls are conducted freely and fairly.
Around nine lakh people live across the 21 urban local bodies spread over Tripura's eight districts. More than four lakh of them reside within the Agartala Municipal Corporation area.
Meanwhile, the ruling BJP, the CPI(M)-led Left parties and the Congress have begun preparations for the elections, including the process of selecting candidates.
