Three suspects wanted in connection with the murder of property dealer Dinesh Yadav were injured and arrested following an exchange of fire with police in Bihar's Sitamarhi district, officials said on Wednesday.

According to police, the suspects allegedly opened fire while attempting to escape during an operation late Tuesday night. The police team returned fire in self-defence, leaving all three suspects injured.

Police subsequently arrested the three and took them to Sitamarhi Sadar Hospital for treatment. Police also recovered three semi-automatic pistols and a backpack containing ammunition from the spot.

Dinesh Yadav was shot dead while he was purchasing vegetables at Bhavdepur Gudri Market under the jurisdiction of Riga police station. Police said he suffered multiple gunshot injuries in the attack.

The Riga police had been investigating the murder and conducting searches for those allegedly involved in the killing.

On Tuesday night, police received information that Sunil Kushwaha, one of the accused in the case, was present with associates near the boundary of the Riga and Parsauni police station areas.

Following the information, teams from Riga police and other units were deployed. The Riga Station House Officer, District Intelligence Unit personnel and the Special Investigation Team formed to probe the murder began a search operation along the Riga-Parsauni road.

Police said the team spotted three men travelling on a motorcycle near the Revasi-Bhagwanpur border. When the suspects allegedly noticed the police, they attempted to flee. Their motorcycle reportedly skidded, causing all three to fall.

According to the police, the suspects then opened fire while trying to escape, prompting the police team to retaliate. All three were injured during the exchange of fire before being taken into custody.

The arrested suspects have been identified as Sunil Kushwaha of Ramnagar village under Riga police station, Mani Kumar from the Belsand police station area and Indal Kumar from the Garha police station area of Sitamarhi district.

Police said the three men have criminal records and are allegedly wanted in several serious cases, including murder and robbery.

Investigators are questioning the suspects about their alleged involvement in the murder of Dinesh Yadav and are also examining their possible links with other members of a suspected criminal network.

Sitamarhi Superintendent of Police Amit Ranjan visited Sadar Hospital to assess the condition of the injured suspects and review the police operation.

Further investigation is underway. Police are also examining the weapons, ammunition and other material recovered during the operation as part of efforts to establish the suspects' alleged roles in the murder and other criminal cases.
